Reflective Analysis of Medication Administration - myassignmenthelp

Question: Discuss about theReflective Analysis of Medication Administration Session. Answer: The following assignment is a reflective essay of my experience during the medication practice session using Gibbs reflective cycle (Cumbria.ac.uk, 2017). Description of the Event: This was a practice session during the CPU at (workplace) and we were given three route of drug administration: oral administration, subcutaneous injection, and Intramuscular injection. I was aware of the rules and steps of oral drug administration mentioned in Australian nursing core practice skills (Anmf.org.au, 2017). Main steps include, washing hands before attending patient, checking Medical Record Number (MRN) number, documenting patients records before and after providing medication and check the detail like time and date, expiry details, dosage of the medicine (Dressman Reppas, 2016). I followed all these steps and took the tablets in the bottle cap before putting the medicine in medication cup. However, I missed two steps: washing hand after medication and wiping the bottle mouth before putting the cap back. Natalie chose the intramuscular route for drug administration and she made no mistakes according to my evaluation. However, Sean injected medicines through sub-cutaneou s route and he missed on so many steps of actual process (Dougherty Lister, 2015). He did not washed his hands after entering the ward and started to assemble the injection essentials (Orsini Divers, 2012). Feeling: The feeling of this session encouraged me a lot. I gained my confidence to handle a patient however missing on few steps made me dis-satisfied. Watching Sean injecting medicine through sub-cutaneous route was little embarrassing as he missed out an important step of washing hands. Whereas Natalies dedication empowered me to focus on my learnings and procedures in future. Her way to treat a patient and administrating drug intramuscularly was inspiring. Evaluation: After completion of the practice session, I felt little disappointed. One major limitation of this experience was failing to comply with the core values and steps of drug administration that could have harmed the patient. However, the positive aspect was, it was only a practice session and I had opportunities to evaluate my faults. Analysis: After this medication administration procedure, I discovered my compliance level to the actual nursing oral drug administration aspects. The core practice skills that need to be followed by every nurse, I was able to remember and complied with those steps. This session made me quite confident about the forthcoming Objective Structured Clinical Assessment (OSCA), as I did not missed out any important steps during the practice. Conclusion: I am able to figure out my drawbacks and areas where I need to focus more before the OSCA exam. I should have spent more time of my practice sessions to focus on medication administration skills that would have helped me to focus in that scenario. I should have focused on the core skills of nursing to be confident during the session. Action Plan: In future, to deal with such situation I am going to focus more on the core practice skills and will spend more hours to practice medication administration. To enact those skills I will be trying to attend few more practice sessions with virtual patients and will evaluate myself. Before attending such practice, I will study about all the core skills. To handle the challenges while providing medication, I will congregate them according to the situation or patient. Reference Australian Nursing and Midwifery Federation (2017).
